9mobile Subscribers to Experience Better Network as NCC Nears Approval of Deal with MTN

9mobile Subscribers to Experience Better Network as NCC Nears Approval of Deal with MTN

Relief may soon come for 9mobile’s 3.3 million subscribers as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) moves closer to approving a major roaming and spectrum-sharing agreement between 9mobile and MTN Nigeria. This deal is expected to significantly boost 9mobile’s struggling network, offering improved coverage and service quality for its users nationwide.

For many subscribers, the frustration has been mounting. Kemi Alaka, a long-time 9mobile user, shared her experience:

“When is the NCC going to step in? 9mobile just isn’t working—I haven’t been able to use my line for over a week.”

The Deal That Could Transform 9mobile’s Network

Once approved, this arrangement will allow 9mobile to tap into MTN’s extensive national spectrum resources, addressing longstanding connectivity issues. In return, MTN will gain access to 9mobile’s spectrum holdings, including key bands like 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz, enhancing its own service delivery.

This partnership isn’t entirely new. Both companies previously tested national roaming services under an NCC-approved trial between August and October 2020, which laid the groundwork for the current agreement. A source familiar with the negotiations revealed:

“The NCC hasn’t given final approval yet, but it’s just a matter of time. It’s a national roaming arrangement—9mobile will be able to use MTN’s infrastructure, and vice versa.”

Why This Matters for 9mobile

Since facing financial turbulence following the exit of its technical partners and investors, 9mobile has struggled to maintain its market share. The company was eventually acquired by LH Telecoms Nigeria, a subsidiary of Light House Capital, but this change in ownership hasn’t stopped the steady decline in its subscriber base—from 4.65 million to 3.28 million.

However, the new deal with MTN offers a lifeline. By leveraging MTN’s robust nationwide network, 9mobile will be able to provide:

  • Stronger network coverage in previously underserved areas
  • Improved voice and data services
  • Greater reliability for both urban and rural subscribers

This could reverse the company’s fortunes and restore customer confidence, which has been eroded by persistent service outages and poor connectivity.

What’s in It for MTN?

While 9mobile stands to benefit from MTN’s vast infrastructure, MTN gains access to additional spectrum resources, which could enhance its already dominant position in Nigeria’s telecom sector. With over 84.6 million subscribers, MTN aims to optimize its network capacity and maintain its competitive edge.

Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group’s spokesperson, previously addressed speculations about the deal:

“MTN Nigeria is not looking to acquire 9mobile’s spectrum. Our focus has been on exploring national roaming opportunities, aligning with our strategy of offering network services beyond traditional boundaries.”

The Road Ahead

The NCC’s approval is the final hurdle before the deal can be fully implemented. Industry analysts believe this partnership could set a precedent for future collaborations among telecom operators in Nigeria, promoting network sharing as a cost-effective way to improve service delivery nationwide.

As Nigeria continues to expand its digital economy, such agreements will play a crucial role in ensuring that millions of citizens have access to reliable and affordable telecom services. For 9mobile users, the hope is that “better days” are indeed just around the corner.
