MTN MoMo Struggles to Gain Traction Among Nigerian Users

Launched in May 2022, MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) aimed to revolutionize financial transactions in Nigeria. However, over a year later, the service has yet to become widely adopted by the average Nigerian.Efforts to locate a MoMo agent reveal significant challenges. Despite its availability, many users report difficulties in finding agents or using the platform for transactions. One particular issue arises during registration via USSD, where users face complications with state and local government inputs. The service’s current market penetration reflects these struggles. According to recent data, MoMo boasts 3.2 million active wallets monthly, accounting for 43.2% of its users. While MTN’s extensive network provides access to a potential 19 million users, much remains to be done to position MoMo as the go-to platform for digital payments.

Adoption Challenges

Feedback from agents highlights the lukewarm reception MoMo has received. In Lagos, some agents report low demand, noting that the service is primarily used for transfers or airtime purchases rather than as a daily financial tool. While a few agents see occasional users, the numbers pale compared to traditional POS services. For instance, one agent in Ikeja noted that only a handful of customers use the service. Similarly, another agent in Magboro, Ogun State, described MoMo adoption as minimal, mainly utilized by agents themselves. Even in high-traffic markets like Oshodi, customer engagement averages only 30 users daily.

Overcoming Early Setbacks

MoMo’s journey has not been without its hurdles. Shortly after launch, the platform faced a major glitch resulting in unauthorized transfers totaling over ₦10.5 billion. This incident may have shaken user trust, slowing adoption further.Despite these challenges, MoMo’s leadership remains optimistic. The company has implemented stricter controls and enhanced platform governance to reassure users and partners. By collaborating with fintech companies and super agents, the service aims to ensure better security and user experience.

The Vision for the Future

The long-term vision for MoMo is ambitious: to serve Nigeria’s banked, unbanked, and underserved populations alike. While MoMo seeks to emulate the success of mobile money pioneers like M-Pesa, it must address the barriers to adoption, build user trust, and improve accessibility. With sustained efforts, the platform hopes to transform how Nigerians interact with digital payments, but its journey is far from over. Time will tell whether MTN MoMo can solidify its place in Nigeria’s evolving financial ecosystem.
