Since taking office in 2021, Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema has championed digital transformation as a cornerstone of economic growth. The establishment of the Ministry of Technology and Science marked a significant step toward fostering innovation and supporting local talent. Numerous initiatives, including e-governance platforms and incentives for tech entrepreneurs, have begun to take shape, signaling a strong commitment to technology-driven development.“We’ve seen more stakeholders recognizing the role of technology in economic transformation,” explained Sandi Chimpala, a tech industry observer. “The government’s initiatives, although not without challenges, are creating a foundation for growth.”

According to a recent report by the UN Capital Development Fund, 47% of Zambians lack digital access, with rural areas and women disproportionately affected. The government has responded with efforts to close these gaps, focusing on expanding ICT infrastructure and embedding STEM education in the curriculum.“We are actively working to ensure technological inclusivity by upgrading rural ICT infrastructure and integrating STEM education from an early stage,” said a representative from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
