Making Legal Services Accessible: A South African Startup’s Mission

Access to legal support in South Africa often feels like a luxury reserved for those with legal aid or the means to pay steep attorney fees. Recognizing this gap, Legal Standpoint, a pioneering legal tech startup, aims to change the narrative.

The Startup’s Vision

Legal Standpoint is the brainchild of Keitumetse Pule, a law graduate from Wits University. The platform focuses on simplifying access to legal assistance through an innovative app that connects users to verified attorneys and provides legal resources at more affordable rates. According to Pule, the mission is simple yet profound: ensuring legal services are no longer a privilege but a right accessible to everyone.“Law applies to all of us, and everyone deserves to understand and utilize it effectively,” Pule shares.

Traction and Achievements

Since its launch, the platform has gained over 1,500 users and onboarded 14 verified lawyers. Legal Standpoint is available on major app stores, offering users a seamless experience to access legal help. The startup’s efforts have not gone unnoticed—it was recognized as one of the top five democracy-affirming startups in Africa and even had the opportunity to pitch at Harvard Business School.

Challenges and Overcoming Barriers

Like many tech solutions entering traditional industries, Legal Standpoint has faced its share of challenges. Pule notes the slow adoption of technology within the legal sector as a significant hurdle. Additionally, funding constraints have tested the startup’s resilience. Despite these obstacles, creative solutions like leveraging social media have helped Legal Standpoint grow its user base and visibility.

The Future of Legal Tech in South Africa

Pule envisions legal tech playing a transformative role in the South African legal landscape. Beyond its current offerings, Legal Standpoint plans to incorporate AI to enhance service delivery and expand into neighboring countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe. The startup also prioritizes inclusivity, with plans to make its resources available in more South African languages and offer offline access to legal articles, addressing barriers like high data costs.

A Message to Potential Users

Legal Standpoint aims to empower users with cost-effective, credible, and accessible legal services. The platform guarantees vetted attorneys and a user-friendly experience, bridging the gap for those previously excluded from the legal system due to cost or complexity. With its innovative approach, Legal Standpoint is not just solving a problem—it’s redefining access to justice in South Africa and beyond.
