The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning about a new malware threat targeting individuals and organizations through LinkedIn job scams. Cybercriminals are posing as recruiters and sending malicious files or links, which, when downloaded or clicked, can compromise systems and steal sensitive data.
The malware, known as CovertCatch, can operate stealthily, capturing keystrokes, recording screen activity, and exfiltrating confidential information without detection. This poses significant risks to businesses and individuals, including financial loss, data breaches, and reputational damage.
To protect themselves, individuals and organizations are advised to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited job offers on LinkedIn. It is crucial to avoid downloading files from unknown sources and clicking on suspicious links. Additionally, enabling multi-factor authentication, regularly updating antivirus software, and conducting frequent security scans can help mitigate risks.
NITDA has also recommended that organizations periodically review their LinkedIn connections and implement strict access controls to sensitive information.
