Edo State has gained recognition as one of the most business-friendly regions in Nigeria, thanks to a series of forward-thinking reforms championed by the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki. This assertion was made by the Edo State Commissioner for Mines and Energy, Donatus Ojiefoh, during a media briefing held in Benin City, the state capital.
Ojiefoh highlighted the transformative initiatives undertaken by the government, particularly in leveraging technology to enhance economic growth and streamline service delivery for residents. A standout achievement is the state’s adoption of an e-governance framework, which has transitioned the government to a near-paperless system. This innovation, according to the Commissioner, has resulted in significant cost savings, with over ₦60 billion redirected toward impactful developmental projects aimed at improving the lives of citizens.
Key Reforms and Achievements
The state’s transition to a fully digital governance system has set Edo apart from most other states in the federation. Over 20 million files have been digitized since the inception of the state, making Edo the only Nigerian state operating at 100% e-governance. This system has enhanced transparency, reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks, and positioned Edo State as a model for cost-efficient governance.
“Governor Obaseki’s ability to save over ₦60 billion simply by eliminating waste in office stationery demonstrates a remarkable understanding of cost management and resource optimization,” Ojiefoh remarked. He emphasized that such innovations have laid a solid foundation for sustainable economic development.
Mineral and Energy Sector Developments
In the mineral resources sector, the state government has made significant strides in tapping into its natural wealth. The establishment of the Edo State Mining and Investment Company has paved the way for structured exploration and management of the state’s abundant mineral reserves. The company has successfully secured 40 mining licenses, which are expected to boost investment opportunities and create jobs for the state’s growing population.
Ojiefoh commended the foresight of Governor Obaseki, stating, “If Obaseki had been governor earlier, Edo would undoubtedly rank among the wealthiest states in Nigeria.” He stressed the importance of ensuring that the state’s next governor continues on the trajectory of reform and innovation established by the current administration.
Edo’s Competitive Advantage
The Commissioner described Edo State as being “10 years ahead of most Nigerian states, apart from Lagos,” in terms of governance and economic development. He urged stakeholders to support the administration’s efforts in sustaining its reforms, which are crucial for achieving a prosperous and progressive future for Edo State.
A Call for Sustained Progress
As Edo continues to set benchmarks in governance and development, Ojiefoh emphasized the need for the state’s leadership to remain forward-thinking. “The next governor must be someone who understands the state’s current investment and development status, as well as the vision required to build on these accomplishments,” he added.
Through a combination of innovative governance, strategic investments in the mineral sector, and an emphasis on sustainability, Edo State is carving a unique path as a business-friendly hub in Nigeria, promising a brighter future for its residents and investors alike.
