Edo State has launched a new initiative aimed at boosting clean energy in the region by establishing Edo Green Energy Limited. This private-sector-driven company will focus on the commercial distribution of gas across the state. The aim is to develop the state’s gas industry by engaging in gas extraction, processing, storage, and sales. The company will primarily sell gas in two forms: Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), with the support of a group of investors.
According to the Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Hon. Enaholo Ojiefoh, the state has set an ambitious goal to transition 60% of vehicles to operate on CNG. This shift is part of a larger plan to significantly reduce transportation costs in the state. A partnership with NIPCO is already in place to promote this transformation, and the new company will collaborate with existing fueling stations, as well as the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), to facilitate the conversion process.
The strategy also involves the installation of CNG refueling stations in various senatorial districts across the state. Furthermore, the focus will extend to converting commercial tricycles to CNG-powered models. This will drastically reduce fuel expenses, with a significant cost-saving of approximately N15,000 per fuel purchase for tricycle operators. The conversion plan will also include generators, ensuring the state’s commitment to a clean energy transition. The system is automated to switch to gas once the fuel runs out, further simplifying the process for users.
