Planned Closure for Maintenance
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will shut down Ibadan Airport for six months to carry out maintenance and upgrades.
Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, shared this update on Friday via his X handle.
Presidential Approval for Upgrade
President Bola Tinubu approved the upgrade of Ibadan Airport to international status eight months ago. This decision aims to enhance the airport’s capacity and operational standards.
Achimugu stated, “Unless new information emerges, Ibadan Airport will close for six months for maintenance and upgrades, starting in early March.”
Efforts to Elevate Ibadan Airport
In June 2024, President Tinubu authorized the transformation of Ibadan Domestic Airport, Alakia, into an international airport. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, announced the development, emphasizing its significance.
Once completed, the upgrade will expand and extend the runway and improve other airport facilities. This transformation will allow international flights to operate directly from Ibadan.
Construction of a New International Terminal
Governor Makinde reaffirmed in January 2025 that construction of a new international terminal is underway. This project is part of broader efforts to meet global aviation standards.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase took place on September 18, 2024. This upgrade will turn Ibadan Airport into a more efficient and globally recognized hub.
