Nigeria Sets New Power Generation Record At 5,543MW

Nigeria’s power sector has reached a new milestone, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announcing a peak power generation of 5,713.60 megawatts (MW). This new record, achieved on March 2, 2025, at 21:30 hours, surpasses the previous peak of 5,543.20 MW, set on February 14, 2025, by 170.40 MW.

While this latest achievement falls 88 MW short of the all-time high of 5,801.60 MW, recorded on March 1, 2021, it highlights ongoing progress in stabilizing and enhancing Nigeria’s power infrastructure despite persistent sector challenges.

Beyond peak generation, the power sector also set a new record for daily energy delivery, reaching 125,542.06 megawatt-hours (MWh) on March 2, 2025. This marks an improvement over the previous daily high of 125,159.48 MWh, recorded on February 14, 2025, representing a 382.58 MWh increase.

This sustained high energy output over a 24-hour period is a crucial indicator of the sector’s ability to meet Nigeria’s growing electricity demand.

Despite these advancements, Nigeria’s power sector continues to grapple with generation shortfalls, transmission bottlenecks, and distribution inefficiencies. Addressing these structural challenges remains essential for achieving a more reliable, sustainable, and efficient electricity supply across the country.

The latest milestones reinforce the sector’s resilience and commitment to progress, but further investments, policy reforms, and infrastructure upgrades will be critical to sustaining and surpassing these achievements in the years ahead.
