Nigeria Retains Remita As Payment Gateway While Enhancing Integration

The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) has clarified that the Federal Government has not phased out Remitta as the approved payment gateway of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Instead, Remitta will be integrated into the newly launched Treasury Management and Revenue Assurance System (TMRAS), which aims to enhance government revenue collection and remittances through multiple payment platforms.

According to Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, TMRAS officially commenced operations on March 4, following directives from President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun. The initiative seeks to improve treasury revenue assurance and optimize budget performance across Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs), and Federal Government-Owned Enterprises (FGOEs).

Mokwa emphasized that TMRAS is designed to streamline and manage revenue collections and government payments while fostering liberalization in the payment process. The system will facilitate efficient revenue tracking, enhance collection methods, and enable timely analysis of financial transactions.

While Remitta remains a secure payment channel, the introduction of TMRAS will enable other CBN-licensed Payment Solution Service Providers (PSSPs) to participate in the revenue collection framework. The government plans to assume control of front-end payment infrastructure and expand the collection system to accommodate multiple service providers.

For now, Remitta continues to serve as the sole approved payment gateway for Federal Government transactions. Revenue payers and the public are advised to continue using the platform or visit www.fgntreasury.gov.ng for official government payments.
