Babatope Agbeyo, Chairman of Gem Giant Ltd, has called on foreign investors to consider Nigeria as a prime destination for investment, particularly in the mining sector, emphasizing that the country’s environment is conducive, safe, and secure for such ventures.
This appeal came following Gem Giant Ltd’s successful signing of a Community Development Agreement (CDA) with the Faforiji community in Osun State, Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in fostering community relations and responsible mining practices.
In his address, Agbeyo encouraged state governments to create and maintain an enabling environment that will foster mining activities, stressing that such efforts are vital for the economic advancement of local communities, state growth, and national prosperity.
He urged governments in mining host states to be supportive and accommodating toward mining and exploration companies, ensuring the safety and security of both the company’s workforce and local residents during operations. “State governments should continue to foster environments that facilitate mining activities for the economic benefit of their communities and the country as a whole,” Agbeyo emphasized.
Additionally, Agbeyo called on government authorities to mediate and maintain peace among stakeholders whenever disputes arise, ensuring smooth operations and mutual understanding among all parties.
Agbeyo also appealed to other mining companies to strictly adhere to national regulations, including the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) guidelines, to safeguard communities and promote sustainable mining practices. “We must commit to responsible mining that protects the environment and prioritizes community welfare,” he added.
Speaking during the signing event, Oba (Dr.) Adebayo Faforiji, the traditional ruler of the Faforiji community, commended Gem Giant Ltd for taking a proactive step towards harnessing the area’s mining potential. “We are grateful that Gem Giant, a company founded by one of our sons, has come forward to explore the mineral wealth of our land, a vision many only speculated about,” Oba Faforiji stated.
The monarch expressed hope that Gem Giant’s exploration will lead to the discovery of gold deposits and other valuable minerals, generating mutual benefits for both the company and the community. “It is our prayer that the company’s efforts will uncover commercial quantities of gold and other minerals, bringing prosperity to our people,” he added.
The landmark event concluded with the foundation-laying ceremony for Gem Giant’s new office in Faforiji, presided over by Oba Dr. Adebayo Faforiji, symbolizing the company’s long-term commitment to the community.
With the successful CDA signing, Gem Giant Ltd is now set to commence exploration activities, pledging to operate in line with international best practices in environmental and social responsibility, while prioritizing the welfare and development of its host community.
