Air Algerie’s Abuja Entry Strengthens Algeria-Nigeria Ties – Ambassador

In a move aimed at deepening economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties, Air Algérie has launched direct flight operations between Algiers and Abuja.

The inaugural ceremony, held in Nigeria’s capital, was attended by key dignitaries and signals a renewed effort to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.

Speaking at the launch, Hocine Mezoued, Algeria’s Ambassador to Nigeria, emphasized that the route was not just about travel convenience but a strategic step toward enhanced intra-African connectivity. With a fleet of 55 aircraft, Algeria’s national carrier aims to bridge travel gaps that have previously required detours outside the continent.

“For years, our citizens had to travel thousands of kilometers beyond Africa to find connecting flights to Abuja. This direct route creates new economic, cultural, and academic possibilities,” Mezoued noted.

He also highlighted that the flight would eliminate long-standing logistical barriers for businesses, encourage tourism and cultural exchange, and foster inter-university collaboration between Nigeria and Algeria.

Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development—represented by Ibrahim Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry described the development as a “milestone” in strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation.

He remarked that air connectivity plays a crucial role in stimulating economic growth and regional collaboration. “This new route represents a vital step in unlocking the socio-economic potential within both countries. It reinforces our shared commitment to work together in building a connected Africa,” said Kana on behalf of the Minister.

He also urged Air Algérie to prioritize excellent customer service and ensure Nigerian travelers are treated with respect and professionalism. Hosnia Kaouah, Head of the Commercial Division at Air Algérie, described the new route as a key part of the airline’s broader ambition to connect Africa with itself and global destinations.

According to her, the African market has the potential to serve over 200,000 annual passengers, making Algiers a strategic hub linking West Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. “This initiative aligns with the African Airlines Association (AFRAA)’s goals to boost cooperation among African carriers and enhance intra-African connectivity,” she added.

Air Algérie’s Algiers-Abuja route will commence with two weekly flights, with plans to expand as demand increases. The initiative is expected to catalyze trade, investment, tourism, and people-to-people exchange between the two nations.

Founded in 1962, Air Algérie is a public economic company that operates across African, European, Asian, and American routes. The historic launch event was attended by notable guests including Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, Cuban Ambassador Miriam Palmero, and representatives from various diplomatic missions and aviation agencies.

This direct air link not only brings Algeria and Nigeria closer geographically but also solidifies their position as emerging leaders in Africa’s journey toward deeper regional integration.
