AltSchool Africa, an online learning platform based in Nigeria, is broadening its scope by introducing new courses in response to the surging demand for tech skills across the continent. Having launched its engineering school earlier this year, the platform now offers specialized programs in data science, data engineering, product marketing, design, and product management.
These additions complement its existing software engineering program, which allows students to focus on areas such as front-end, back-end, or cloud engineering. The expansion highlights AltSchool’s mission to equip young Africans with the skills required for thriving careers in technology.
According to CEO and co-founder Adewale Yusuf, the platform has seen overwhelming interest from young people eager to join the tech workforce. He noted, “This year has been transformative. We’ve grown significantly, achieved recognition, and helped individuals secure jobs in multiple countries. The demand for tech skills is unprecedented.
”The school, which charges an affordable tuition of $30 per month, has enrolled students from over eight African countries. Recently, it established a hub in Rwanda to extend its reach beyond West Africa. With a flexible online learning model, students who do not initially meet the admission criteria are given a chance to improve during a three-month probation period.AltSchool’s year-long courses, which include an internship component, are designed to quickly address the increasing demand for technical talent. As startups continue to flourish and global tech companies like Google and Amazon recruit from the region, the need for skilled developers is at an all-time high.
“The global demand for tech talent presents an incredible opportunity for African nations,” Yusuf explained. “With English as a primary language and favorable time zones, countries like Nigeria and Ghana are well-positioned to supply this talent.
”AltSchool was co-founded in 2021 by Yusuf, Akintunde Sultan, and Opeyemi Awoyemi after identifying gaps in foundational knowledge among software engineers. It aims to bridge this gap while also helping individuals transitioning into tech careers. To enhance the learning experience, AltSchool collaborates with higher education institutions to provide diploma certifications for its students. By offering quality education at an affordable rate, the platform is creating pathways for young Africans to participate in and benefit from the global digital economy.
