Twitter has expanded its tipping feature, introducing Ethereum wallet addresses as a new payment option alongside Bitcoin. This update allows users to send tips using ETH, in addition to existing payment methods. The platform has also extended its reach by integrating international payment providers like Paga, Paytm, and Barter by Flutterwave, catering to users in countries such as Nigeria, India, and Ghana.
While Bitcoin transactions are facilitated through the Lightning Network to minimize fees, the addition of Ethereum reflects Twitter’s broader embrace of cryptocurrencies. This move follows the platform’s adoption of NFT profile pictures, signaling its growing engagement with digital assets.
Though the new feature enables users to share their Ethereum wallet addresses directly, it doesn’t support ENS (Ethereum Name Service) addresses. Tipping through Ethereum requires users to copy a recipient’s wallet address and process payments through their crypto wallet. However, the higher transaction fees on Ethereum may pose a challenge for smaller tip amounts.
The tipping feature is available to all users aged 18 and above on both iOS and Android devices. This development underlines Twitter’s commitment to reducing barriers in the digital economy and providing users with more diverse financial tools.
