The announcement was made through an official release signed by Michael Otu, the company’s secretary, and was filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited on Tuesday.
The statement highlighted that Dr. Umeoji’s appointment aligns with Zenith Bank’s tradition of promoting leadership from within, as part of its executive transition plan and succession strategy. Dr. Umeoji will begin her tenure on June 1, 2024, immediately following the end of Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu’s term as GMD on May 31, 2024.

Dr. Umeoji holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Jos and has earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting and Law from Baze University, where she graduated with first-class honors. She continued her education with advanced studies, including a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom, and an MBA from the University of Calabar. Additionally, she earned a Doctorate in Business Administration from Apollos University in the United States and completed a Certificate in Economics for Business from the prestigious MIT Sloan School of Management.
Further advancing her expertise, Dr. Umeoji attended renowned institutions like Harvard Business School, where she completed the Advanced Management Program (AMP), and Columbia Business School, where she earned a certificate in the Global Banking Program. She has also participated in several executive education programs globally, including those offered by MIT Sloan School of Management and the Wharton Business School, to develop a robust skill set in strategic thinking, management, and economics.
Dr. Umeoji’s appointment is not only a significant milestone for Zenith Bank but also a groundbreaking moment for the Nigerian banking sector, as she becomes a role model for future generations of female leaders. Her work as a Peace Advocate with the United Nations (UN-POLAC) and her philanthropic efforts through NGOs such as the Pink Breathe Cancer Foundation and the Adorable Foundation further demonstrate her dedication to societal development and the empowerment of women.
In recognition of her contributions to the nation, the Nigerian government honored Dr. Umeoji in 2022 with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). Her wealth of knowledge about Zenith Bank’s operations, combined with her impressive educational credentials, positions her to lead the bank into a new era of growth, ensuring its continued success and enhancing shareholder value.
As she takes on this new role, Dr. Umeoji is poised to address the challenges and opportunities facing Zenith Bank and the banking sector, driving sustainable growth and reinforcing the bank’s leadership in the Nigerian financial industry.
