The Edo State Government, in collaboration with Oando Energy, is set to launch an ambitious renewable energy initiative aimed at generating 175 megawatts (MW) of wind power. This project will involve the construction of wind turbines across key locations in the state’s three senatorial districts, designed to support the energy needs of local industrial clusters.
The proposed wind farm locations have been strategically selected based on comprehensive studies conducted by Oando Energy, which identified areas with significant wind currents. These locations include Uhunmwonde, Uromi, and Akoko Edo, which are known for their favorable wind conditions. The project is part of the state’s broader plan to drive industrialization through sustainable energy sources.
Hon. Enaholo Ojiefoh, the Commissioner for Mining and Energy in Edo State, shared insights into the project during an interview with journalists. He highlighted the state’s focus on providing reliable energy to areas with substantial economic activity. “Oando conducted an energy audit and identified areas with strong wind currents. They are in discussions with local authorities, particularly in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, to move forward with the project,” Ojiefoh explained.
Additional locations identified for turbine installations include areas between Uromi and Ubiaja, near the railway bridge, where wind currents are also optimal. A third site will be located in the region between Etsako and Akoko Edo, close to the Igbira camp. These locations were chosen due to their potential for efficient wind energy generation.
The renewable energy initiative is aimed at addressing the power needs of industrial zones within the state. Oando Energy, which is leading the development, has already planned to install meteorological masts in these regions to monitor wind patterns and gather the necessary data for the construction of the turbines.
Ojiefoh emphasized that this project is crucial for industrial growth in the state. The renewable energy programme is especially focused on supporting mining hubs like Ikpeshi, Akoko Edo, which has a high concentration of mining activities. Oando Energy is also preparing to establish a plant in the area to cater to the energy demands of local investors.
By generating wind power, the state expects to solve energy challenges in these key industrial clusters and foster economic growth through reliable, sustainable energy solutions.
