The Edo State Government is driving economic growth and enhancing business operations within the state through significant reforms in land administration, led by the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki. By integrating advanced technology, the state has streamlined the process of obtaining title documents for land ownership, creating a more favorable environment for business development.

According to Mrs. Osaro Grace Aihie, Managing Director of the Edo Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS), these reforms have had a major impact on attracting investors to Edo State. The improved land administration system has reduced bureaucratic hurdles, making it easier for businesses to operate and for investors to engage with the local economy.

In an interview in Benin City, Aihie explained that one of the key objectives of the land reforms is to ensure a transparent and efficient process, where both investors and local communities can engage in a constructive manner. “The ease of doing business is about creating a fair environment for investors, ensuring they understand the local landscape, and fostering collaboration between investors and residents,” Aihie noted.

The reforms also emphasize resolving issues through dialogue and mutual understanding, ensuring that businesses face minimal obstacles when operating in the state. Aihie pointed out that the government’s approach has helped foster cooperation between communities and investors, facilitating job creation and other local benefits.

One of the significant changes brought about by the adoption of new technology is the substantial reduction in land disputes and fraudulent transactions. Aihie highlighted how the system has addressed the issue of land grabbing, which was previously a significant challenge for investors. Prior to the technological improvements, buyers often faced losses when they purchased land without verifying ownership, only to later discover that the property was mortgaged or not owned by the seller.

“We’ve made it clear that conducting a proper land search is essential before making any major investment,” Aihie advised. “For a minimal fee, potential buyers can ensure the land they wish to purchase is free from legal complications. This simple step has prevented countless cases of investment losses.”

Aihie further explained that the state’s land registry has helped prevent overlap issues by tracking and verifying ownership. In cases where disputes arise, EdoGIS facilitates negotiations or refers the issue to the courts for resolution. The aim is to ensure fair and legal land transactions, reducing double-dealing and building investor confidence.

Additionally, Aihie noted that EdoGIS has been working closely with local communities to encourage land registration, which further prevents disputes and land grabbing. This proactive outreach has been well-received by local residents, as they recognize the benefits of secure, well-managed land ownership. “When communities embrace registration, it leads to a more peaceful and organized environment, increasing land value and attracting more investors,” she stated.
