FG Contemplating Speed Bumps On Third Mainland Bridge To Control Over-Speeding

The Federal Government is considering the installation of speed bumps on Lagos Third Mainland Bridge as part of efforts to address reckless driving and reduce the frequency of accidents.

David Umahi, the Minister of Works, disclosed this during a stakeholder meeting on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. He voiced concerns over the excessive speeding observed on the recently rehabilitated bridge and urged motorists to drive cautiously.

He warned that if the trend continues, the government may be forced to introduce speed bumps—an action that could lead to severe traffic congestion. “We need to appeal to road users. The speed on that bridge is alarming. If we install speed bumps, it will create significant traffic gridlock,” Umahi stated.

Beyond the discussions on speed regulation, Umahi highlighted ongoing rehabilitation work on critical infrastructure, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Carter Bridge, and Eko Bridge. To enhance security and enforce compliance, the government has installed CCTV cameras both on and beneath the Third Mainland Bridge which are set to be inaugurated soon, and will be monitored by officials to track vehicle movement and enforce speed limits.

He further revealed that the rehabilitation efforts on the Third Mainland Bridge have been extended to Falomo, where additional streetlights and surveillance cameras have been installed. He emphasized that activities along this stretch will be remotely monitored from Abuja.

“We have extended the rehabilitation from Third Mainland Bridge to Falomo, creating a visually appealing roadway with enhanced lighting and security systems. Whatever happens on that stretch—including the ramps—is under surveillance, with real-time monitoring from Abuja,” Umahi added.

Providing an update on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the minister confirmed that the first 30 kilometers of the project are set for completion and will be inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu in May. Additionally, he noted that adjustments had been made to the initial route to minimize demolitions and reduce the number of affected buildings.

With ongoing developments in infrastructure and road safety, the Federal Government remains committed to balancing urban mobility with security and efficiency in Nigeria’s road network.
