Mahmoud Isa-Dutse Takes Over as Citibank Nigeria Chairman

Mahmoud Isa-Dutse has been named the new chairman of the board at Citibank Nigeria Limited, following the retirement of Shamsuddeen Usman. With a strong background in finance, governance, and economic policy, Isa-Dutse is expected to bring strategic leadership to the bank.

Isa-Dutse, who joined Citibank Nigeria’s board as an independent non-executive director in August 2024, has pledged to enhance governance and strengthen the bank’s role in driving financial inclusion and economic development.

Isa-Dutse brings a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors. His career spans collaborations with government agencies, central banks, and global financial institutions. Over the years, he has contributed significantly to banking regulations, financial stability policies, and economic development programs.

Key Positions in Government and International Finance

Currently, Isa-Dutse represents Nigeria on the Executive Board of the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah. He previously served as the Permanent Secretary of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Finance from 2015 to 2020, where he played a crucial role in financial policy and economic planning.

During his tenure, he represented the ministry on several key boards, including:

  • The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
  • The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC)
  • The Nigeria Investment Promotion Council (NIPC)
  • The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI)
  • The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC)

Additionally, he held significant positions as an alternate governor on the boards of:

  • The World Bank Group
  • The African Development Bank
  • The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development
  • The International Fund for Agricultural Development

Between 2015 and 2020, Isa-Dutse also served as a director on the boards of the African Export-Import Bank and the OPEC Fund for International Development.

Isa-Dutse holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He also earned an MBA from the prestigious Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. His academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria.

In addition to his academic achievements, he is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, further solidifying his expertise in the financial sector.
