Major Blackout Hits Embassies, Estates In Abuja

Another widespread power outage has disrupted operations in at least eight embassies and multiple residential estates in Abuja, with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) citing a technical fault on the affected feeder as the cause.

Between March 18 and 23, 2025, the AEDC recorded seven cases of power outages, impacting key institutions such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Garki General Hospital, and the National Library. The causes of these disruptions were attributed to six technical faults and one planned maintenance activity.

This latest blackout affected several embassies, including those of the United States, Turkey, Cuba, Ethiopia, Iran, Liberia, Egypt, and Japan, along with their surrounding areas.

Additionally, various residential communities were impacted, including Brains & Hammer City Estate, Today Estate, Dape District, Katsina Estate, Paradise Estate, Ochacho Estate, Kafe District, American Embassy Estate, and parts of Gwarinpa.

In response, AEDC issued a statement reassuring residents and businesses that its technical team was actively working to restore electricity.

“We regret the inconvenience caused by this outage and appreciate our customers’ patience as we work to resolve the issue,” the statement read.

Further, the company announced a scheduled maintenance activity on Sunday, March 23, 2025, which will temporarily disrupt vending services for prepaid customers.

“During this brief period, prepaid customers may experience temporary interruptions when recharging their meters or accessing vending platforms. Normal service will resume immediately after the maintenance is completed. This activity is part of our ongoing efforts to improve service reliability and efficiency. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding.”
