The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has provided insights into the recent decline in electricity supply across Nigeria, attributing the issue primarily to constraints in gas availability for thermal power plants.
In a statement released on Friday by Bolaji Tunji, the special adviser on strategic communication and media relations to the Minister, Adelabu emphasized that the decrease in gas supply to thermal generating companies has been the main factor contributing to the nationwide power shortfall. This limitation has hindered the ability of power plants to produce sufficient electricity, thus impacting the overall supply to distribution companies and subsequently leading to power shortages for consumers.
Adelabu further assured that the federal government is actively addressing the issue by prioritizing the settlement of outstanding payments owed to power generation companies, a move aimed at improving the availability of gas for electricity production. He acknowledged the current challenges and expressed optimism that the situation would improve soon, signaling that corrective measures are being implemented to stabilize the power sector.
