MTN Discontinues 15GB Weekly Data Bundle After Customer Backlash

Sudden Price Hike Sparks Outrage

MTN Nigeria has officially withdrawn its 15GB weekly data bundle, following widespread criticism from subscribers over a steep price increase. The telecom giant also issued an apology for the abrupt change.

On Tuesday, many customers reacted angrily when the price of the 15GB data plan jumped from N2,000 to N6,000. However, sources within the company revealed to BusinessDay that the plan’s original price was N4,500 before being discounted to N2,000 as part of a promotional effort to boost internet usage.

MTN Addresses Customers’ Concerns

In a message sent to subscribers on Thursday, MTN acknowledged the frustration caused by the price hike.

“We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 percent increase on your favorite digital bundle. We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story,” the message read.

Apologizing further, the company added, “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die, and we will never stop showing you how much.”

15GB Bundle No Longer Available

A company insider confirmed to BusinessDay that the 15GB weekly plan has been removed. Checks on both the MoMo app and MyMTN app verified that the plan is no longer listed.

Telecom Tariff Increases on the Horizon

MTN’s decision comes at a time when telecom operators, including itself, are adjusting their pricing structures. Following a recent approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on January 20, telecom providers have been implementing tariff increases of up to 50 percent across various services.
