Nigeria and Egypt Strengthen Ties with Focus on Security, Agriculture, and More

Nigeria and Egypt are working towards deepening their bilateral relations by transforming their cooperation into a comprehensive partnership. This move is aimed at exploring new opportunities for collaboration across various sectors.

During a recent visit to Cairo, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, engaged in high-level discussions with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, as part of the third round of political consultations. Both ministers expressed their commitment to enhancing their diplomatic ties, emphasizing mutual respect for sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

This development was confirmed in a statement released by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy to Minister Tuggar.

Key Areas of Collaboration
Nigeria’s delegation to Egypt included Minister of Water Resources, Joseph Utsev, and Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, highlighting the priority sectors for cooperation.

One of the major initiatives discussed was the establishment of a Nigeria-Egypt Chamber of Commerce, set to be launched by the end of 2025. The chamber is expected to facilitate stronger economic ties and will be formally introduced at the fourth ministerial consultations in Abuja in 2026.

Recognizing the potential for greater economic engagement, both countries agreed to encourage public and private sector partnerships in vital areas such as agriculture, energy, telecommunications, and infrastructure development.

Facilitating Trade and Mobility
The ministers commended recent agreements that have eased travel between the two nations, including the exemption of diplomatic passport holders from visa requirements and the revision of visa fees for regular travelers. These measures are expected to boost business and cultural exchanges.

Security Cooperation and Regional Stability
Given the shared challenges of terrorism and extremism, Nigeria and Egypt agreed to enhance their collaboration in security efforts. They aim to exchange knowledge and best practices in combating terrorism, reinforcing their commitment to supporting conflict resolution and peacebuilding initiatives across Africa.

Both countries also reiterated their commitment to working together on regional and global issues, supporting the African Union’s efforts to tackle continental challenges and drive integration. They affirmed their dedication to promoting democracy, good governance, and the implementation of the AU’s Agenda 2063, which focuses on Africa’s long-term socio-economic transformation.

Looking Ahead
To ensure the continuity of their growing partnership, Nigeria and Egypt have scheduled the next ministerial-level Joint Committee meeting for the final quarter of 2025, where further strategies to enhance cooperation will be discussed.
