Obaseki to Roll Out Free Public Wi-Fi in Edo’s 18 Local Government Areas

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State is set to inaugurate EdoNet, a project providing free, high-speed internet access across more than 60 locations in the state. This initiative aligns with the administration’s vision to connect rural communities and empower young residents to explore opportunities in technology and creative industries.

The announcement was made by Hon. Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, the Commissioner for Digital Economy, Science, and Technology, in a statement shared with The Nigerian Observer. He emphasized the growing importance of technology and creativity in global economic discussions and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to positioning Edo creatives on the international stage.

Wi-Fi Locations

The free public Wi-Fi will be available at various locations, including:

  • Local Government Headquarters: Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba-Okha, Ovia North-East, Ovia South-West, Orhionmwon, Esan North-East, Esan South-West, Esan Central, Esan West, Owan West, Owan East, Uhunmwonde, Etsako West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, and Akoko Edo.
  • State Institutions and Public Facilities: Edo State Secretariat Complex, Government House in Benin City, John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy, Edo State College of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Benin campuses, Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, and Edo State Polytechnic in Usen.
  • Markets and Community Centers: Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub, Ekiosa Market, and New Benin Market, among others.

Digital Transformation Milestones

Edo State has achieved notable progress in its digital transformation efforts. In September 2023, the state became the first in West Africa to adopt fully paperless government operations. Additionally, over 2,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables have been laid across the state, connecting local government offices, primary healthcare centers, and public institutions. This infrastructure supports seamless e-governance and access to internet services for residents.

Free public Wi-Fi has already been deployed in select locations, including the Secretariat Complex on Sapele Road, Oba Market, and the University of Benin. The broader rollout aims to expand connectivity and enhance the quality of internet services available to residents.

Residents can find more information about the project on the official EdoNet website: https://edonet.edostate.gov.ng.
