The Organised Private Sector of Nigeria (OPSN), comprising key organizations such as the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), has expressed its position on the planned nationwide protest slated for August 1. The protest aims to address the rising inflation and economic difficulties in the country.
In a joint statement, the OPSN emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue and collaboration between the government and citizens as a preferred alternative to demonstrations. Other OPSN members include the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME), and Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists (NASSI).
The statement reads:
“The Organised Private Sector of Nigeria (OPSN), representing major business organizations such as MAN, NACCIMA, NECA, NASME, and NASSI, has reviewed the proposed protest by some citizens concerning ongoing economic challenges affecting the general populace.
“As a non-political body representing the private sector, we underscore the significance of dialogue and constructive engagement as the best means of resolving pressing national issues. We urge all stakeholders to adopt this approach, which has the potential to yield meaningful and sustainable solutions for the country’s benefit.
“However, should the protest proceed, we strongly appeal for it to be conducted peacefully and orderly. Peaceful demonstrations will allow citizens to voice their concerns while respecting the rights of others and maintaining public order. It will also enable the government to respond constructively and engage productively, paving the way for possible collaborative solutions.”
The OPSN also highlighted the economic risks associated with large-scale protests. “As representatives of the private sector, we are deeply aware of the potential economic consequences of disruptions caused by mass protests. Our members are key contributors to economic growth and employment, and interruptions in business activities could have far-reaching effects on the economy and livelihoods.”
The group added, “We have consistently engaged with the government at different levels to address the country’s economic challenges. It’s vital to remember the substantial losses businesses suffered during the hijacked #EndSARS protests, which affected numerous operations nationwide.
“We also urge security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property throughout this period. OPSN remains dedicated to working alongside all stakeholders to foster a peaceful and thriving Nigeria for all citizens.”
