Safaricom Leads Consortium in $812 Million Investment to Digitize Kenya’s Healthcare System

Safaricom, a leading telecommunications company in Kenya, has taken a significant step towards advancing healthcare in the country by leading a consortium to implement a comprehensive Integrated Healthcare Information Technology System (IHTS).

In partnership with Apeiro Ltd and Konvergenz Network Solutions Ltd, Safaricom will invest over $812 million over ten years to develop, maintain, and support the IHTS, which aims to modernize and streamline healthcare services across the nation. This innovative project will leverage technology to enhance the interoperability of health systems, digitize public health facilities, and improve data security.

The consortium’s investment will be recovered over a ten-year period through monthly installments, ensuring a sustainable and cost-effective solution for the Kenyan government. This innovative public-private partnership model allows the Ministry of Health to implement a cutting-edge digital health solution without incurring significant upfront costs.

This project aligns with Safaricom’s broader commitment to leveraging technology for social good. The company has a proven track record of deploying digital platforms that have positively impacted the lives of Kenyans.

This significant investment in Kenya’s healthcare sector comes amidst a period of strong financial performance for Safaricom. The company recently reported record earnings, driven by robust growth in its core businesses, including its mobile money service, M-Pesa.
