Shuttlers, a Nigerian mobility startup revolutionizing shared commutes, has taken a significant step toward sustainability and cost efficiency by introducing 20 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles in the first quarter of 2025. This strategic move has already yielded a 29% reduction in rider costs while eliminating 23.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to CEO Damilola Olokesusi in a recent LinkedIn post.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, has been struggling with rising fuel prices, placing immense financial pressure on both consumers and businesses. With CNG emerging as a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol, its adoption has gained traction across the transportation sector. Shuttlers’ investment in CNG-powered buses aligns with this broader industry trend, as mobility startups seek innovative ways to maintain profitability while addressing the rising costs of transportation.
The newly introduced CNG-powered fleet has already completed 1,484 trips, serving 19,292 passengers—accounting for 4% of the startup’s total 2nd quarter user trips. These figures highlight the growing acceptance of alternative fuel sources within Nigeria’s urban mobility landscape.
Despite its advantages, CNG adoption has faced skepticism due to safety concerns, particularly regarding cylinder placement in vehicles. However, Olokesusi has assured riders that Shuttlers has implemented stringent safety measures, equipping its vehicles with fireproof canisters and automatic extinguishers, alongside regular inspections. These proactive measures have resulted in a flawless safety record, achieving “100% safe trips” in the first quarter of 2025.
Following a successful $4 million funding round in 2023, Shuttlers is now looking to further expand its fleet of non-petrol vehicles in the second quarter of 2025. This expansion not only aligns with the company’s long-term vision for sustainability but also reinforces its commitment to providing cost-effective and environmentally responsible transportation solutions in Nigeria.
