World Innovation League Secures $1.2 Million to Boost Black Representation in Canadian Tech

The World Innovation League (WIL), formerly known as NaijaHacks, has received a significant $1.2 million grant from Canada’s Digital Technology Supercluster. This funding will empower WIL to launch a vital program aimed at increasing the representation of Black individuals in the Canadian tech sector.

Recognizing the stark underrepresentation of Black Canadians and Black immigrants in Canada’s tech sector (where they currently constitute only 2.6% of the workforce), the Canadian Digital Technology Supercluster has partnered with WIL to address this critical gap.

The funding will enable WIL to implement a comprehensive program that will provide 500 Black individuals in Canada with access to in-demand tech skills through intensive training, mentorship, and valuable industry experience. This initiative aims to equip participants with the necessary skills and connections to secure meaningful employment opportunities within the thriving Canadian tech sector.

WIL, founded by Uchi Uchibeke, has a proven track record of success in fostering tech talent. Originating as a hackathon for Nigerian developers, NaijaHacks evolved into AfricHacks and ultimately transformed into the global talent accelerator known today as WIL. This journey exemplifies WIL’s commitment to empowering underrepresented communities and fostering a more inclusive and equitable tech ecosystem.

The $1.2 million grant represents a significant milestone for WIL. This funding, coupled with the imminent arrival of an additional $10 million in funding, will enable the organization to expand its impact and train a total of 4,000 individuals over the next four years. This ambitious initiative has the potential to significantly increase the representation of Black individuals in the Canadian tech sector and contribute to a more diverse and inclusive technology landscape.
